Diesel prices hit record highs amid Middle East conflict and refining shortages

Global diesel prices have reached historic highs, with the United States national average surpassing $6 per gallon for the first time. This surge is driven by a combination of geopolitical tensions, specifically the conflict between the United States and Iran, and significant disruptions to global refining capacity. The military conflict has impacted the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for oil, and contributed to Brent crude prices exceeding $100 per barrel.

In addition to Middle Eastern instability, refining capacity in Russia has been curtailed due to Ukrainian drone strikes, and the United States is facing low distillate inventories. The White House is reportedly considering using the Defense Production Act to expand domestic oil refining capacity to mitigate these shortages.

Economically, the spike in diesel costs poses a significant threat to inflation. Because diesel is essential for the transportation of goods, agriculture, and construction, the rising costs are expected to cascade through supply chains, increasing the price of consumer goods and food. In Ecuador, the price of high-octane gasoline has risen due to these international pressures, while in Luxembourg, diesel prices have approached record levels, exceeding €2 per litre.
