Dietary habits and stress linked to nightmares and sleep paralysis

Recent research published in Frontiers in Psychology suggests a link between dietary habits and nightmares. A study involving nearly 1,100 participants found a strong connection between the severity of nightmares and lactose intolerance or other food allergies. Dr. Torre Nielsen from the University of Montreal noted that adjusting dietary habits for those with food sensitivities may help alleviate frequent nightmares.

Beyond diet, experts from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Cleveland Clinic highlight that frequent nightmares are often tied to stress, anxiety, psychological trauma, or certain medications. Sleep paralysis, a state where a person is conscious but unable to move during the REM phase, can also cause frightening hallucinations. While distressing, sleep paralysis is considered a transient state and not a life threat.

To improve sleep quality and reduce these episodes, experts recommend maintaining consistent sleep schedules, ensuring adequate rest, and practicing good sleep hygiene to break the cycle of insomnia and anxiety.
