Dietary management strategies for diabetes and hypertension

Managing diabetes and hypertension requires a clear understanding of nutritional standards, specifically regarding salt and carbohydrate intake. For diabetes management, the Japan Diabetes Society recommends maintaining HbA1c levels below 7.0% to prevent complications. While condiments like ponzu may have a minimal direct impact on blood sugar, they can contribute to excessive sugar intake if they contain mirin or sugar, and they significantly impact salt consumption.

Regarding salt, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare sets daily targets of less than 7.5g for men and 6.5g for women, with even stricter limits for those with hypertension. For instance, using one tablespoon of ponzu can account for approximately 1g of salt, leaving very little room for other dietary components.

To better manage carbohydrate intake, nutritionists suggest visualizing sugar content by converting grams into the number of stick sugar packets (where one packet equals approximately 3g). This method helps individuals intuitively grasp the volume of sugar in common foods; for example, a bowl of white rice contains roughly 53g of carbohydrates, equivalent to about 17.6 stick sugar packets.
