Dietary studies link whole grains to heart health and ultra-processed foods to depression
Recent nutritional research highlights the significant impact of diet on both cardiovascular and mental health. A meta-analysis published in the European Heart Journal, which synthesized data from 87 randomized trials, indicates that the consumption of whole-grain cereals is linked to improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and other cardiometabolic health indicators.
Separately, a study published in JAMA Psychiatry suggests a link between ultra-processed foods—such as sodas, packaged snacks, and processed meats—and increased risks of mental health issues. In a small study involving individuals with depression and metabolic disorders, reducing the intake of ultra-processed foods by over 85% led to significant improvements in depression and anxiety measurements.
