Dietary supplements that may pose risks to liver health

Experts are warning that certain dietary supplements, despite being marketed as natural, can cause significant liver inflammation and damage. Because the liver is responsible for filtering toxins and processing nutrients, exposure to high concentrations of specific compounds can lead to serious health complications.

Key supplements identified as potentially harmful include:

• Green tea extract: While brewed tea is generally safe, concentrated EGCG capsules in high doses (800 mg or more) are linked to oxidative stress and elevated liver enzymes. Experts recommend limiting EGCG intake to 300 mg daily.

• Vitamin A: As a fat-soluble vitamin, excess amounts can accumulate in the liver. High doses of retinol can lead to toxicity; experts advise staying within recommended limits to avoid acute damage.

• Niacin (Vitamin B3): While safe in nutritional amounts, pharmacological doses often used for cholesterol management (1 to 6 grams daily) can trigger liver inflammation and jaundice.
