Health risks of vitamin deficiency and supplementation

Overview

Medical experts continue to warn against the unregulated use of dietary supplements, emphasizing that ‘natural’ products can pose significant health risks. Recent scrutiny has focused on Vitamin D quality and dosage. A study by consumer magazine Öko-Test of 23 preparations found that many supplements contained excessively high daily dosages, with only one of four tested Vitamin D drop products receiving a ‘good’ rating. International guidance on Vitamin D intake varies significantly, with recommendations ranging from 400 IU by the UK’s NHS to 2,000 IU suggested by the Endocrine Society.

Newer warnings highlight the danger of ‘dose stacking,’ a phenomenon where individuals take multiple products containing the same ingredient, leading to a cumulative intake that exceeds safe upper limits. Fat-soluble vitamins, such as Vitamin A and Vitamin D, are particularly hazardous because the body stores them in the liver.

Clinical reports, including a case at Medlatec General Hospital involving a 47-year-old man, illustrate these risks; the patient experienced severe kidney dysfunction after Vitamin D levels reached more than three times the safe limit. Excessive Vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia, nausea, fatigue, and potentially chronic kidney failure or tissue calcification. Other risks include nerve damage from high doses of Vitamin B6 and impacts on the liver and bones from excessive Vitamin A. Health authorities, such as the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, emphasize that exceeding tolerable upper intake levels significantly increases the risk of adverse effects.
