Dietary trends and fiber intake impact digestive health

Health experts are warning against abrupt dietary changes, specifically the social media trend known as ‘fibermaxxing,’ where individuals rapidly increase fiber intake to improve skin or reduce body fat. While fiber is essential for gut health, sudden increases can lead to bloating, fullness, and constipation. Experts suggest a gradual transition and adequate fluid intake to avoid these issues.

To support digestive health and reduce inflammation, specialists recommend an anti-inflammatory approach, such as the Mediterranean diet. This includes consuming at least 25 to 28 grams of fiber daily from sources like vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, while limiting ultra-processed foods, sugar, red meat, and certain sweeteners like sucralose.

Additionally, medical professionals caution that popular routines like 16:8 intermittent fasting may pose risks for certain groups. Specifically, individuals with diabetes using insulin or sulfonylureas face an increased risk of hypoglycemia, while those with gastrointestinal issues like gastritis or acid reflux may experience worsening symptoms.
