Mexico launches national mental health strategy for students

Mexico has launched a national mental health strategy titled ‘El ABC de las Emociones’ (The ABC of Emotions) aimed at adolescents and young adults aged 14 to 18. Coordinated by the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) and supported by the federal government under President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the initiative is being implemented across various states, including San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Sinaloa, Estado de México, Michoacán, Hidalgo, Campeche, Morelos, and Tlaxcala.

The program focuses on prevention, self-care, and emotional regulation within secondary and high school settings. It utilizes tools such as weekly tutoring, interactive reading, and specialized guides for students, teachers, and families to help youth recognize and manage emotions, identify warning signs, and seek professional help when necessary.

In several regions, the strategy includes community-based approaches and inter-institutional cooperation between education and health sectors. For example, in Michoacán, local health professionals contributed to the program's content, while in Tlaxcala, the initiative is integrated with local mental health clinics. The ultimate goal is to create safe school environments that support the holistic development and psychological well-being of students.
