Mental health and suicide prevention in Latin America
Overview
Regional efforts to address mental health and suicide prevention in Latin America continue to expand through policy standardization and community-based education. In Ecuador, the Ministry of Public Health has introduced a manual to standardize first responses to suicide attempts. Mexico is advancing its strategic framework through a National Strategy for the Prevention and Care of Suicidal Behavior (2026–2030).
Mexico’s student-focused ‘El ABC de las Emociones’ program has expanded across Colegio de Bachilleres campuses, including Tampico and Zacatlán, to help adolescents regulate emotions. To further institutionalize support, Deputy Iliana Sánchez Chávez has proposed reforming the Mental Health Law of the Federal District to prioritize mental health detection in Mexico City’s public secondary schools, citing data that one in seven young people experiences mental disorders.

In Argentina, Río Grande has institutionalized a Municipal Mental Health Council to coordinate institutional and security force efforts, while Concepción del Uruguay is conducting school workshops through the ‘Hablemos sobre suicidio’ program. Venezuela’s Insalud Apure has launched sensitization workshops for early detection. In Uruguay, following a suicide involving a local official, authorities in Lavalleja have called for stronger mental health protocols and ‘posvention’ support in workplaces. Additionally, Mexico’s DIF Municipal de Jesús María launched the ‘Ponte mis lentes’ campaign to foster empathy regarding mental health struggles.
