Mental health and suicide prevention in Latin America
Overview
Various Latin American regions have implemented diverse strategies to address mental health and suicide prevention. In Argentina, municipalities in Río Grande and Concepción del Uruguay have established mental health councils and school-based workshops to identify warning signs. Venezuela has launched sensitization workshops for early detection, while Uruguay has called for stronger mental health protocols in public workplaces. In Mexico, efforts include the ‘Ponte mis lentes’ campaign to foster empathy. The national ‘Vive saludable, vive feliz’ strategy, promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, has reached over 10.8 million students in public primary schools to integrate mental and physical health into the educational system. Secretary of Public Education Mario Delgado Carrillo has emphasized transitioning this strategy into a permanent practice within the National Educational System. In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, new data and community actions have highlighted escalating challenges. In Ecuador, the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) reported 1,143 suicide deaths in 2024, with experts identifying occupational stress—including excessive workloads and workplace harassment—as a significant psychosocial risk factor. Argentina continues to face critical trends. In the province of Entre Ríos, the suicide rate reached 20.8 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2025, nearly double the national average. Nationally, suicide has become the leading cause of death for individuals aged 15 to 34. In response, the Fundación Mucho por Vivir TDF organized a march in Tierra del Fuego, and the Commission for the Integral Approach to Suicide (CAIS) scheduled community engagement activities in Posadas, Misiones, to promote support networks. Leading up to World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, officials have emphasized responsible communication. In Argentina, Gustavo Hein, President of the Chamber of Deputies of Entre Ríos, has urged political leaders to stop using the term ‘suicide’ as a rhetorical device or metaphor.
