Mental health and suicide prevention in Latin America

Overview

Various Latin American regions have implemented diverse strategies to address mental health and suicide prevention. Argentina continues to face critical trends. In the province of Entre Ríos, the suicide rate reached 20.8 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2025, nearly double the national average. Nationally, suicide has become the leading cause of death for individuals aged 15 to 34. In response, the Fundación Mucho por Vivir TDF organized a march in Tierra del Fuego, and the Commission for the Integral Approach to Suicide (CAIS) scheduled community engagement activities in Posadas, Misiones, to promote support networks. Leading up to World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, officials have emphasized responsible communication. In Argentina, Gustavo Hein, President of the Chamber of Deputies of Entre Ríos, has urged political leaders to stop using the term ‘suicide’ as a rhetorical device or metaphor.
