Brazil advances battery passport legislation for electric vehicles
Legislative efforts are advancing in Brazil to implement a “battery passport” system, similar to digital identity initiatives in China, India, and the European Union. The proposal, Senate Bill PL 2.132/2025 authored by Senator Jaques Wagner, has passed the Senate and moved to the Chamber of Deputies.
The system aims to prevent fraud in the used electric and hybrid vehicle market by providing individual traceability for batteries. Through tools like QR codes, users and professionals could access data regarding chemical composition, manufacturing dates, accident history, charge cycles, and current health status.
In addition to consumer protection, the Brazilian proposal includes regulations for reverse logistics. This would mandate shared responsibility among manufacturers, importers, retailers, and owners for the proper collection and disposal of battery cells, ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
