Digital decluttering improves smartphone performance and mental health

Managing digital clutter on smartphones can improve both device performance and mental well-being. Technical slowdowns often occur when storage space drops below 10%, necessitating the deletion of large files, clearing cache, and performing system updates to maintain responsiveness.

Beyond technical utility, experts suggest that digital clutter can negatively impact mental health. Susan Albers, PsyD, from the Cleveland Clinic, notes that digital chaos can be as toxic to mental health as physical clutter, contributing to stress and anxiety. This is often linked to “digital hoarding,” a phenomenon described by Emanuel Maidenberg, PhD, involving the excessive accumulation of digital content due to a fear of losing information. Such clutter can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed, decreased productivity, and increased anxiety driven by constant notifications and the fear of missing out.
