Digital device usage and its impact on child development
Clinical psychologist Tatjana Morozova highlights that while mobile phones and tablets are common in modern childhood, their usage becomes problematic when digital content displaces learning, socializing, and hobbies. Rather than focusing solely on screen time duration, parents should monitor how device usage affects a child's daily life.
Key indicators of potential addiction include a loss of control over time spent online, emotional outbursts when access is restricted, and the neglect of real-life communication, studies, or physical activities. Excessive and uncontrolled use is also linked to sleep disturbances, changes in diet, vision issues, poor posture, and increased risks of anxiety and depression.
While total removal of devices is considered unrealistic, experts suggest regulating use through clear family rules. When used correctly, technology can support cognitive development, fine motor skills, and social connections. A study conducted in Russia indicated that electronic devices are appearing in the lives of children as young as three to six years old.
