Psychological and societal impacts of smartphone usage
Overview
Research into modern digital habits continues to highlight the psychological and societal impacts of high smartphone dependency. Previous findings established that compulsive use is driven by dopamine-seeking behaviors and linked to increased digital anxiety, decreased verbal communication, and sleep deprivation in adolescents.
Recent data indicates a significant decline in verbal communication, with social psychologist Matthias Mehl noting that people are speaking approximately 120,000 fewer words per year than in previous years across a broad demographic. In South Korea, a study of nearly 49,000 adolescents found a strong correlation between problematic smartphone use (PSU) and decreased sleep satisfaction, anxiety, and loneliness, with high-risk teenagers averaging seven hours of daily device use.
Neuroscientist Renê Skaraboto warns that constant notifications create a state of “perpetual urgency,” which reduces focus and impairs decision-making. To combat this, some users are adopting “dumbphones” to establish physical barriers against dependency. Additionally, experts note that smartphone use during workouts can lead to mental fatigue and diminished physical performance.
Regarding child development, clinical psychologist Tatjana Morozova emphasizes that usage becomes problematic when digital content displaces learning, socializing, and hobbies. Key indicators of addiction include a loss of control over time, emotional outbursts, and the neglect of physical activities. Digital education expert Laura Cuesta adds that caregivers should monitor behavioral shifts, such as “vamping” (using screens late at night), rather than focusing solely on screen time duration. While technology can support development when regulated through family rules, excessive use is linked to increased risks of anxiety, depression, and social isolation.
