Dimayor to resume Colombian football on August 19 after earthquake

Dimayor has announced that professional football in Colombia will resume on Wednesday, August 19, following the suspension caused by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake on August 10. The resumption aims to protect the economic livelihoods of those working within the sports industry while ensuring matches only occur in cities and stadiums that have been cleared for safety.

To accommodate the disrupted schedule, Dimayor is considering significant structural changes to the Liga BetPlay and Copa BetPlay formats. This includes potentially replacing the traditional semifinal quadrangular phase with a direct elimination playoff system. Additionally, the end of the championship may be pushed from December 13 to December 22.

In a show of solidarity, Dimayor and its 36 professional clubs will make an economic donation to reconstruction efforts. Furthermore, authorized stadiums will serve as collection centers for food and essential goods donated by fans. Due to structural damage at the Pascual Guerrero stadium in Cali, América de Cali will temporarily play its home matches at El Campín in Bogotá.
