Colombian sporting disruptions following earthquake

Overview

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Colombia has led to the suspension and cancellation of major professional sporting events to prioritize disaster relief and safety.

The Colombian Cycling Federation cancelled the 2026 Vuelta a Colombia mid-race after the fifth stage to ensure roads remained clear for emergency services and humanitarian aid, particularly in the Caldas department. Due to the early termination, Diego Camargo was declared the overall winner, followed by Javier Ernesto Jamaica in second and Edgar Andrés Pinzón in third. The earthquake, centered in San José del Palmar, Chocó, has resulted in at least 273 fatalities and significant structural damage.

In response, the División Mayor del Fútbol Colombiano (Dimayor) has announced that professional football will resume on August 19. Following an extraordinary assembly, Dimayor has finalized structural changes to address scheduling issues. While a proposal to switch the Liga BetPlay II-2026 to a direct playoff system was rejected by a vote of 17 to 3, the Copa BetPlay will undergo significant changes to alleviate the calendar. The round of 16 and quarter-finals in the Copa BetPlay will now be played as single-match knockout rounds.

Home-field advantage for these single matches will be determined by specific criteria: if a first-division team faces a second-division team, the second-division club hosts; if both are from the first division, the team with the better mid-year reclassification standing hosts. The semifinals and the final will return to the traditional home-and-away format.

Dimayor and its 36 professional clubs will make an economic donation to reconstruction efforts. Due to structural damage at the Pascual Guerrero stadium in Cali, América de Cali will temporarily play home matches at El Campín in Bogotá.
