Dimitris Koutsoumpas criticizes Achilles Shield air defense

Dimitris Koutsoumpas, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), criticized the government during a parliamentary session regarding the ‘Achilles Shield’ air defense system. Koutsoumpas argued that the system’s effectiveness was disproven by recent Iranian attacks, describing the defense network as having become a ‘sieve.’

He claimed the Achilles Shield serves to integrate Greece further into Euro-Atlantic military planning through infrastructure and bases rather than protecting cities and islands, warning that this could make the country a target for retaliation. Additionally, Koutsoumpas criticized the government’s fiscal priorities, alleging that while billions are available for military programs, debt repayment, and corporate support, austerity measures are applied to public needs.
