Dimitris Koutsoumpas criticizes Greece's role in energy corridor plans

Dimitris Koutsoumpas, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), has criticized the Greek government's involvement in energy projects, specifically the Vertical Corridor and the positioning of Greece as a gateway for American liquefied natural gas (LNG) into Europe.

Writing in the newspaper ‘Ta Nea Savvatokyriako’, Koutsoumpas argued that these initiatives are being framed as national successes, but he contends they primarily serve the interests of specific domestic and American corporate groups, shipowners, and the local bourgeoisie. He warned that such involvement deepens Greece's entanglement in the energy conflict between the EU and Russia, as well as regional competition between American interests and the Turkey-Israel plans for control in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Koutsoumpas further stated that the Greek population gains no benefit from these plans, which he claims do not reduce energy costs and increase environmental risks. He cautioned that making energy infrastructure, such as the LNG terminals in Revythousa and Alexandroupoli, central to these geopolitical tensions could make them targets for military retaliation in the event of an escalation in conflict.
