Dimitris Markopoulos pledges fiscal responsibility amid energy crisis
Dimitris Markopoulos, the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, has reaffirmed the Greek government's commitment to supporting citizens facing the international energy crisis while maintaining fiscal stability. Speaking at the annual General Assembly of the Panhellenic Federation of Fuel Station Owners at the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Markopoulos addressed the economic pressures on households and businesses.
Ahead of the announcement of support measures for heating oil scheduled for October 14, the Deputy Minister emphasized that economic policy must be based on responsible and costed proposals. He criticized opposition parties for suggesting generalized tax cuts, arguing that such proposals must respect the country's fiscal obligations and European regulations.
Markopoulos also noted the broader economic uncertainty within Europe, observing that even major economies like France are facing significant pressures that impact state borrowing costs. He stated that Greece must maintain the stability and credibility it has achieved to continue supporting its citizens effectively.
