PASOK political proposals in Greece
Overview
The Greek political party PASOK has introduced a series of proposals aimed at addressing private debt and pension reforms. The party’s 11-point plan focuses on protecting primary residences by allowing individuals to retain homes valued up to €200,000 for single persons and up to €320,000 for families of four through long-term repayment plans of up to 35 years. For debts to the state, social security, and municipalities up to €500,000, PASOK suggests a 120-installment plan that could include a 30% debt forgiveness upon successful completion.
Party leader Nikos Androulakis argued that the current economic situation, driven by high inflation, leaves millions of households and small businesses trapped in debt. He criticized the New Democracy government for allowing the transfer of bad loans to servicers, which he claims has increased auctions and undermined social stability. In response, the Ministry of National Economy and Finance rejected the proposals, asserting that many measures are existing laws and that the plan ignores European regulations and could create injustices for consistent taxpayers.
PASOK spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas has further challenged the government’s management of the extrajudicial mechanism. While noting that approximately €19 billion of debt has been regulated, Tsoukalas argued this is only a fraction of the total €236 billion in unregulated private debt. He accused the government of favoring investment funds and servicers, vowing that under PASOK, the ‘speculation party’ would end. The party also continues to advocate for pension reforms, including the restoration of EKAS and the return of the 13th pension.
