Director Fatih Akin discusses new film Geister

German director and author Fatih Akin is discussing his new film, Geister, which is scheduled for theatrical release on November 5. The story follows two high school graduates, Farasha and Faris, who experience love at first sight at a party. After Farasha dies in an accident, the narrative explores a dialogue between the real world and the afterlife.

Akin revealed that the project was inspired by a suggestion from his ten-year-old son during a period of personal crisis following the production of his previous film, The Cut. The development of the film spanned ten years, during which the story evolved from a tale of friendship into a romance.

To complement the film's themes, Akin collaborated with composer Malakoff Kowalski to create an old-fashioned, orchestral soundtrack. The musical direction was intended to serve as a counterpoint to modern, atmospheric film scores, drawing inspiration from classical motifs and composers such as Ravel and Debussy to evoke a supernatural atmosphere.
