Release of Fatih Akin film Geister

Overview

Director Fatih Akin has released the stylized fantasy film Geister, set in Hamburg. The narrative follows two students, Farasha and Faris, whose connection blurs the lines between reality and the afterlife after Farasha dies following a tragic incident.

In discussions regarding the film, which was released in cinemas on November 5, Akin noted that the project was inspired by a suggestion from his son during a personal crisis. He revealed that this crisis stemmed from the significant financial and personal consequences of his 2014 film, “The Cut”. The 15 million euro production resulted in a financial disaster, leaving Akin to still pay off debts related to the project. He described the aftermath as a period where he doubted his talent and lifestyle, noting that the ambition of the project proved to be too large and technical.

The development of the Geister story spanned ten years, evolving from a tale of friendship into a romance. To support the supernatural atmosphere, Akin collaborated with composer Malakoff Kowalski on an orchestral soundtrack inspired by classical motifs, such as those of Ravel and Debussy.

As the film premiered, further details emerged regarding the plot. The protagonists, Faris (played by Eren M. Güvercin) and Farasha (played by Mariam Dawoud), meet at a graduation party in the Hamburg TV Tower. Following Farasha’s death in a car accident, the film explores a liminal space described as a limbo, where Farasha visits Faris in his dreams for forty nights. The story focuses on their deepening feelings and the necessity of an eventual final farewell.

Additionally, illustrator Bea Davies is hosting a reading and signing event for a graphic novel adaptation of the story as part of the 5th Dortmund Comic Reading Week.
