Discord granted 10 days to propose user protection measures in Brazil
A Federal Court in the Federal District has granted Discord ten business days to present a conciliation proposal aimed at enhancing digital protections for women, children, and adolescents. The decision follows a lawsuit filed by the Brazilian government, through the Advocacia-Geral da União (AGU), seeking to compel the platform to implement more effective safety mechanisms.
Discord has committed to proposing protocols for handling sextortion notifications, improving the detection and moderation of content involving animal cruelty, and establishing better data preservation standards to assist criminal investigations. The legal action was intensified following a July incident where a 13-year-old girl was reportedly induced to take her own life during a live broadcast on the platform.
The AGU has also requested R$ 500 million in compensation for collective moral damages, stating that previous measures proposed by Discord were insufficient to address identified vulnerabilities, such as flaws in age verification systems. The proposed conciliation document will undergo analysis within a total period of 30 business days.
