Discord ordered by Brazilian court to enhance safety for minors

A Brazilian Federal Court has ordered the communication platform Discord to immediately implement enhanced safety measures to protect children, adolescents, and women. The ruling, issued by Judge Anderson Silva of the 14th Federal Civil Court of Brasília, follows a public civil action filed by the Attorney General's Office (AGU) in August.

The legal action was prompted by investigations into platform vulnerabilities, including a case involving the death of a 13-year-old girl in July. The AGU alleges significant failures in age verification and user protection mechanisms. Discord has denied direct responsibility for the fatality, stating the act occurred on a different platform.

Key court mandates include: - Preventing the recreation of removed servers, channels, or communities through new identities. - Preserving moderation, communication, and account records for at least six months. - Establishing a specific protocol for sextortion cases involving minors. - Implementing moderation for content involving animal cruelty or abuse when minors are at risk. - Demonstrating operational capacity in Portuguese for security and moderation in Brazil.

Failure to comply with these orders will result in a daily fine of R$ 100,000.
