Discord suspends livestreaming in Brazil following ANPD order FAST-MOVING

Discord has suspended its livestreaming and real-time video sharing functionalities in Brazil following a directive from the National Data Protection Agency (ANPD). The preventive measure aims to mitigate risks to children and adolescents on the platform.

The decision follows the death of a 13-year-old girl from Naviraí, Mato Grosso do Sul, who was allegedly coerced into self-harm and suicide during a group livestream. Authorities reported that five teenagers were arrested in connection with the incident.

The ANPD based its order on the Digital Statute of Children and Adolescents (ECA Digital), noting that Discord's implementation of end-to-end encryption may have hindered the platform's ability to automatically detect and prevent violence or self-harm. The suspension will remain in effect until Discord demonstrates the implementation of adequate technical and governance safeguards.

Discord confirmed the suspension of video features but noted that text, audio, and direct messaging services remain available. The company stated it is actively engaging in dialogue with the ANPD to find a solution to restore these features.
