Discord to present safety plan to Brazilian authorities

Discord has committed to presenting a proposal to the Brazilian Attorney General's Office (AGU) to implement safety measures for children, adolescents, and vulnerable groups. This commitment follows a meeting prompted by the suicide of a 13-year-old girl during a live broadcast on the platform.

The National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has also launched an investigation to determine if Discord violated the Digital Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA Digital). The agency is examining potential failures in age verification, risk prevention, and the removal of content related to self-harm and suicide. Discord has been given five business days to provide data regarding its prevention mechanisms.

Additionally, the Instituto Defesa Coletiva has filed a civil public action seeking the suspension of Discord in Brazil and a minimum fine of R$ 300 million for collective damages. The lawsuit alleges systemic failures in monitoring and responding to reports, particularly concerning criminal groups active on the platform. The AGU is currently evaluating whether to pursue a Conduct Adjustment Agreement (TAC) or initiate judicial measures if the proposed safety plan is deemed insufficient.
