Disney and ESPN prepare for first Super Bowl broadcast
Disney and ESPN are preparing for their first-ever Super Bowl broadcast, Super Bowl LXI, scheduled for February 14, 2027. To enhance the viewing experience, Disney announced a Star Wars-themed animated alternate telecast titled ‘Star Wars Funday Football’. This broadcast will feature characters from the Lucasfilm franchise, including Anthony Daniels returning to voice C-3PO, and will stream on Disney+ and the ESPN App, as well as airing on Disney Channel and Disney XD.
In addition to the Star Wars altcast, ESPN has confirmed other alternative broadcasts, including the ManningCast and a Pat McAfee Field Pass.
Behind the scenes, reports indicate tension regarding contract negotiations between longtime NFL commentary duo Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. While Buck has recently signed a contract extension, Aikman has not yet done so, a situation that reportedly led to an argument between the two broadcasters during a recent game between the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Rams.
