Disney+ cancels live-action Power Rangers series over budget concerns
Disney+ has scrapped its planned live-action Power Rangers reboot during the development stage. The project, which was being developed alongside 20th Television, will not move into production.
Industry reports indicate the decision was driven by business and budgetary concerns rather than creative issues. Producing a high-end superhero series involving complex visual effects, costumes, and large-scale action sequences requires significant investment. This financial risk is compounded by the fact that Disney does not own the Power Rangers intellectual property; the franchise belongs to Hasbro. Consequently, Disney would be funding a major production without the ability to capture the associated merchandise and toy revenue.
The series was set to be written and executive produced by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, the showrunners known for Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians. While the project has ended, the creators remain under contract with Disney to finish the third season of Percy Jackson and develop other projects for 20th Television.
