A planned live-action Power Rangers reboot for Disney+ has been cancelled after approximately 18 months of development.

Initially, Hasbro confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con that the series was in early development under showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz. The project intended to feature a new team of heroes inheriting the classic colors in a world that had forgotten the Rangers’ existence.

Ultimately, Disney+ decided not to move forward with the series. The cancellation was reportedly driven by business and budgetary concerns rather than creative differences. A significant economic factor cited was that Disney does not own the Power Rangers intellectual property, which belongs to Hasbro, making the high investment required for a large-scale superhero series less financially attractive.

Reports indicate that the high costs associated with visual effects, costumes, and action sequences made the investment risky for a licensed property. Because Disney would be funding a major production without the ability to capture the associated merchandise and toy revenue, the project was deemed too expensive to pursue.

Following the official cancellation, the YouTube channel Ninja Kidz released a free live-action series titled ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Return’. Featuring martial arts combat and original storytelling, the production has received official approval from Playmates, the publisher of new Power Rangers toys, as an homage to the franchise intended to engage the fan community.
