Disney expands gaming strategy through Epic Games investment
Disney is expanding its presence in the video game industry through a strategic partnership with Epic Games. Following a $1.5 billion investment in the Fortnite developer, the company aims to create standalone game universes that integrate gaming, storytelling, and community creativity.
Disney’s gaming division has seen significant financial success, generating $4 billion in consumer spending through licensing partnerships in the last fiscal year. The current portfolio includes nine games that have each surpassed $1 billion in retail sales, such as Kingdom Hearts and Marvel Strike Force.
Moving forward, Disney intends to shift away from simple movie or television adaptations, focusing instead on developing original stories designed specifically for the video game medium. The company's existing catalog includes various titles on platforms like the Nintendo Switch, ranging from movie tie-ins to original titles like Disney Dreamlight Valley.
