Disney posts AI legal director role following division layoff warning

The Walt Disney Company is restructuring its Legal & Global Affairs division following a memo from Chief Legal and Global Affairs Officer Horacio Gutierrez warning staff that the department will become a ‘much smaller organization.’ In the memo sent on September 18, Gutierrez stated the company is taking a ‘dispassionate look’ at workflows to increase efficiency through automation, self-service models, and outsourcing.

Six days after the layoff warning, Disney posted a job listing for a Director of AI Enablement and Legal Engineering in Burbank or New York. The role, which carries a salary between $185,500 and $260,600 depending on location, is tasked with designing end-to-end AI solutions, building document pipelines for contract and regulatory review, and determining whether the company should develop or purchase its own AI tools.

While the job posting indicates a shift toward technological investment, the company has not explicitly stated that AI will directly replace specific legal personnel. The Legal & Global Affairs division employs fewer than 1,000 people worldwide.
