Disney seeks to expand Infinity Vision certification to major Hollywood studios
Disney is seeking to expand its ‘Infinity Vision’ certification to other major Hollywood studios, positioning it as a broad alternative to IMAX. According to Bloomberg, Disney has held discussions with Paramount, Universal, Sony, and Lionsgate regarding the use of the label for their own film releases.
Infinity Vision functions as a certification for large-format screens rather than a proprietary projection technology. To earn the label, theaters must meet specific technical standards, including laser projection, Dolby 7.1 surround sound, and screens approximately 50 feet wide. Currently, approximately 5,500 screens worldwide meet these criteria, which is roughly three times the number of IMAX theaters.
The initiative serves as a strategic move for Disney, particularly as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to release on December 18 without an IMAX release due to an exclusive three-week window held by IMAX for ‘Dune: Part Three’. Early data suggests strong interest in the format, with over 70% of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ presales attributed to Infinity Vision showtimes.
