Disney Infinity Vision cinema certification launch
Overview
Disney has launched ‘Infinity Vision’, a commercial certification and auditing standard for Premium Large Format (PLF) cinemas. Rather than utilizing proprietary projection technology, the initiative ensures theaters meet specific technical requirements to justify premium ticket pricing.
At CinemaCon, the studio detailed that to earn certification, theaters must adhere to strict standards, including a minimum screen width of approximately 15 meters and the mandatory use of laser projection instead of xenon lamps. This system is designed to ensure consistent high quality for major productions, such as Marvel and Star Wars films.
The rollout is intended to maximize box office potential for major upcoming productions, specifically ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. The format has already generated $16.5 million in pre-sales in the United States following the release of the film’s official trailer.
This strategy mirrors previous efforts used with ‘Avatar’ and involves using re-releases of older titles, such as ‘Avengers: Endgame Extended’, to test technical capabilities and build consumer interest ahead of major sequels.
Disney is now seeking to expand the ‘Infinity Vision’ label to other major Hollywood studios, positioning it as a broad alternative to IMAX. Reports indicate discussions have been held with Paramount, Universal, Sony, and Lionsgate regarding the use of the certification for their own releases.
To qualify, theaters must meet standards including laser projection, Dolby 7.1 surround sound, and screens approximately 50 feet wide. Approximately 5,500 screens worldwide currently meet these criteria, roughly three times the number of IMAX theaters. The expansion is particularly strategic as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled for a December 18 release without an IMAX window, which is held exclusively by ‘Dune: Part Three’. Early data shows over 70% of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ presales are attributed to Infinity Vision showtimes.
