Disney World Launches Solar‑Powered Smart Trash Cans

Walt Disney World has begun replacing its traditional flat‑top trash cans with solar‑powered compactors that automatically compress waste and alert cast members when they need emptying. The new units feature curved tops, solar panels with a backup plug‑in option, and themed designs that vary by park, such as a Tree of Life motif at Animal Kingdom and a French Pavilion look at EPCOT.

The rollout, which started with the Germany pavilion at EPCOT, is expanding to Magic Kingdom and other locations. Disney responded to guest confusion—stemming from the previous cans being used as makeshift tables—by publishing an instructional video that demonstrates how to open and use the new bins. The company says the upgrade will reduce custodial workload and keep walkways clearer for visitors.
