Display technology advances unveiled at CEATEC 2026

At CEATEC 2026 in Japan, new advancements in wearable display technologies were showcased, focusing on making augmented reality (AR) devices more discreet and lightweight.

TDK unveiled a prototype for direct retinal projection (DRP) smart glasses. This technology utilizes a meta-optic mirror that is only 150 nanometers thick to project images directly onto the wearer's retina. By replacing bulky optical waveguides with this compact laser engine and transparent mirror, the design aims to make smart glasses indistinguishable from standard prescription eyewear. The innovation received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Award.

In a separate development, the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology presented research into contact lens-type displays. This project aims to create a prototype within two years, with a commercial release goal in seven years. The technology uses holograms to trick the eye into perceiving images at a distance, preventing focus issues caused by the proximity of the lens. The project involves a consortium including various academic and industrial partners to address challenges such as wireless power supply and miniaturized solid-state batteries.
