Advancements in wearable display technologies
Overview
TDK announced the development of a ‘meta-optics mirror’ designed to facilitate the creation of smart glasses that resemble conventional eyewear. This ultra-thin mirror, measuring approximately 150nm, is intended for use with Direct Retinal Projection (DRP) systems to project laser light directly onto the retina, allowing for more compact and lightweight designs compared to previous bulky systems.
At the CEATEC 2026 exhibition in Japan, TDK demonstrated a prototype of these DRP smart glasses, which received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Award. Alongside these developments, research was presented by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology regarding contact lens-type displays. This research utilizes holograms to project images at a distance and aims for a prototype within two years.
