Distracted driving causes high crash rates in New Mexico and Colorado

Authorities in New Mexico and Colorado are highlighting the rising dangers of distracted driving and inattention on roadways. In New Mexico, the Department of Transportation reported 18,344 distracted-driving crashes and 181 fatalities in 2024. Driver inattention is also cited as a primary factor in accidents involving e-bikes, which saw 355 crashes involving pedalcyclists in 2024, resulting in 7 fatalities and 24 serious injuries.

In Colorado, the State Patrol reported over 3,500 crashes primarily caused by distracted driving in 2025. Officials warned that cellphone use significantly impairs a driver's ability to process visual cues, especially at higher speeds. Colorado law imposes escalating fines for cellphone use while driving, starting at $89 for a first offense and reaching $260 for a third offense within 24 months.
