Traffic accident increases in Ecuador

Overview

Ecuador is experiencing a significant rise in traffic accidents. The National Transit Agency (ANT) reported 12,933 incidents between January and July 2026, representing a 12.7% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This trend has contributed to a 10.4% increase in injuries and a 10% rise in fatalities.

Distracted driving, including mobile phone use, has overtaken speeding as the primary cause of accidents in the country, accounting for 3,598 incidents—a 38.3% increase. The provinces of Guayas and Pichincha report the highest number of accidents.

Recent localized incidents include a bus rollover in Quito’s La Floresta sector, which injured two people and caused road closures, and a heavy trailer accident on the Perimetral road in Guayaquil. The Guayaquil accident occurred shortly after authorities announced plans to increase controls on heavy transport following a series of similar accidents.
