DistroKid removes songs following Universal Music Group lawsuit

DistroKid has removed a small number of songs from streaming platforms following a lawsuit filed by Universal Music Group (UMG). UMG alleges that the independent distributor engaged in deceptive trade practices and copyright infringement by flooding services like Spotify with AI-generated, SEO-optimized, and copyright-infringing content. UMG claims these actions divert royalties away from legitimate rights holders.

The removals have caused concern among independent musicians, some of whom claim on social media that their legitimate, non-AI-generated tracks were among those deleted. These artists have also reported difficulties with DistroKid’s customer service. The situation highlights the growing tension in the music industry regarding the impact of AI-generated music and the responsibilities of digital distributors in managing intellectual property and quality control.
