Djibouti and IGAD coordinate humanitarian and migration responses
Djibouti Prime Minister Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed has ordered the adaptation of reception facilities in the Obock region to accommodate new Yemeni refugees arriving in areas such as Godoria and Moulhoulé. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for coordinated action between state services and international partners, including the UNHCR, ICRC, IOM, WHO, and Qatar Charity, to ensure a dignified and secure response.
In a broader regional context, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is addressing human mobility challenges in the Horn of Africa. In Djibouti, IGAD is supporting the National Coordination Mechanism on Migration to better integrate climate change and disaster-related movements into national policy. This initiative aims to manage population shifts caused by rising temperatures, droughts, and flooding.
Additionally, IGAD convened a regional exchange in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, focused on refugee self-reliance. The forum sought to leverage private sector innovation to create pathways for employment, entrepreneurship, and financial inclusion for refugees, returnees, and host communities across the IGAD member states.
