Djibouti appeals for international aid amid Yemeni refugee influx
Djibouti is facing a significant humanitarian challenge due to an influx of refugees fleeing conflict in Yemen. According to the UNHCR, nearly 4,000 people have recently crossed the Red Sea to reach Djibouti. UN estimates suggest that while over 3,000 people have made the 30-km journey across the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the number of arrivals could rise to 10,000 in the coming months.
At the 81st UN General Assembly, Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Abdoulkader Houssein Omar appealed for international support, stating that the country cannot meet the growing needs for food, shelter, and essential services alone. The influx is placing heavy pressure on the Obock region and the Markazi refugee camp, which is nearing capacity.
In response to the crisis, the Djibouti Ministry of Health organized a medical caravan in Obock on September 26, 2026. The initiative provided 535 medical interventions, including general medicine, pediatric, and prenatal consultations. Health teams also identified and treated 39 cases of severe and moderate acute malnutrition among the displaced populations.
