Yemen conflict and humanitarian displacement

Overview

Violence in Yemen has escalated significantly, causing a surge in internal displacement across several governorates. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that at least 46,000 people were displaced due to intensifying clashes, particularly in Hodeidah and Taiz, as well as Lahj, Aden, and Ibb. UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg characterized the conflict as entering a “new and more dangerous phase.”

Local authorities reported a sharp spike in displacement, noting that 2,398 families were displaced in a single day on September 10. This included 823 families in Taiz and 1,575 families in Lahj. The total number of documented displaced families rose from 7,348 on September 9 to 9,746 following these developments.

Displacement is concentrated in districts such as Jabal Habashi, Al Ma'afir, Maqbanah, and areas along the West Coast. Humanitarian needs are critical, with urgent requirements for food, shelter, clean water, and hygiene kits. In response, schools in Lahj have been used as shelters, and the Executive Unit for IDP Camp Management is coordinating with the UNHCR to address the growing crisis.
