Yemen: Escalating war and worsening humanitarian crisis
Overview
The ‘Dawn of Yemen’ offensive has intensified, marked by significant territorial shifts and a worsening humanitarian crisis. Government-aligned forces, supported by Saudi-led coalition airstrikes, have secured control over the Bab al-Mandab Strait, Mayun Island, and strategic locations including Kirfan Mountain in Taiz province. Following the launch of a renewed offensive on October 5, military activity has escalated along the Bab al-Mandab, Dhubab, and Mokha axis. While government forces report repelling Houthi attacks in the al-Maqatirah district, both sides have suffered significant casualties.
The United Nations has warned that Yemen is sliding back into full-scale war. Internal displacement has surged to over 276,000 people since June, with approximately 126,000 concentrated in Taiz. Additionally, thousands have fled to Djibouti, including 3,836 arrivals, half of whom are children. UNICEF estimates that at least 110,000 of the displaced are children.
Humanitarian conditions are catastrophic. A Houthi-led blockade in Taiz has isolated hundreds of thousands, with the World Food Programme reporting that 600,000 people in the city alone cannot access aid. Water production has decreased by half, and truck-delivered water costs have tripled. UNICEF has identified 52,000 cases of acute malnutrition in the region.
The healthcare system is nearing collapse. In Taiz, 98 health facilities are partially operational or out of service. Critical shortages of fuel, oxygen, and medical supplies threaten life-saving services, including dialysis and neonatal care, leaving 154 children in incubators at life-threatening risk. Furthermore, the UNHCR has confirmed a cholera outbreak in the Marzaki camp.
