Yemen conflict displaces over 85,000 people amid Houthi offensives
Escalating conflict in Yemen, driven by Houthi offensives along the strategic Red Sea coast and the Bab al-Mandeb strait, has triggered a massive humanitarian crisis. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that at least 85,818 people have been displaced since early September. The most significant displacements have occurred in the Taiz governorate, with approximately 56,000 people fleeing, followed by Lahj with 19,000 and Hodeidah with over 8,000.
As fighting intensifies, more than 2,000 displaced persons have fled by sea to Djibouti. In the coastal town of Obock, Djibouti's Minister of Economy and Finance, Ilyas Moussa Dawaleh, noted that 1,400 arrivals were recorded within a single 24-hour period. Local authorities and international partners are providing emergency assistance, including food, water, and medical care, but officials warn that Djibouti cannot manage this regional emergency alone and requires urgent international support.
In addition to the civilian exodus, military evacuations have taken place. Approximately 1,000 soldiers were evacuated from Hanish and Zuqar islands to Djibouti via boats. Separate operations successfully rescued 34 personnel from Zubair Island, transporting them to Midi Port, and another group of 40 coast guard and naval personnel were rescued after their vessel ran out of fuel near Bab al-Mandeb.
