Yemen conflict escalation triggers mass displacement and humanitarian crisis
Renewed fighting in Yemen, involving clashes between Houthi forces and the government-backed coalition, has triggered a severe escalation in the country's humanitarian crisis. UNICEF reports that approximately 12 million children are now threatened by the hostilities, with over 57,000 children displaced in just the last two weeks. The violence has also impacted essential services, with reports of deaths, injuries, and missing children, alongside the closure of hundreds of schools and dozens of health facilities.
Internally, an estimated 100,000 people have been displaced by the recent fighting. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that nearly 20 million people in Yemen require humanitarian assistance due to prolonged conflict, economic decline, and disease outbreaks.
As fighting intensifies, thousands of Yemenis are fleeing across the Red Sea to Djibouti. Djibouti's Interior Minister, Omar Abdi Said, stated that more than 2,500 people have arrived since last Thursday and warned that the influx has already exceeded national capacity. He expects the number of displaced persons in Djibouti to reach 10,000 in the coming weeks and has called on the United Nations and international partners to mobilize urgent financial resources to manage the crisis.
