Djibouti migrant boat capsizes, killing at least 139 people
A migrant boat capsized off the coast of Djibouti near the port town of Obock while traveling from Djibouti to Yemen, resulting in a significant loss of life. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that the vessel was carrying approximately 305 people when it overturned in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The death toll has been revised to at least 139 people, including 15 children. Among the recovered bodies were 52 men and 42 women. While more than 80 survivors were rescued and are receiving medical and psychosocial support, at least 84 people remain missing. All identified survivors are Ethiopian nationals.
Survivors reported that the vessel began to sink shortly after passengers boarded, likely due to extreme overcrowding. IOM Mission Chief Alexandre Coissac described the event as a “devastating loss of life” and a “stark reminder” of the dangers faced by migrants in the Horn of Africa seeking economic opportunities in Gulf countries despite regional instability and conflict.
