Migrant shipwreck off the Djibouti coast

Overview

A migrant vessel traveling from Djibouti toward Yemen capsized in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait near the port town of Obock during the night of October 8 to 9. The vessel was carrying between 305 and 350 people when it overturned, likely due to extreme overcrowding.

Updated figures indicate that at least 139 people have died in the shipwreck, which occurred near Guhere, north of Obock. Approximately 84 individuals remain missing, while at least 82 survivors have been accounted for. The migrants were primarily Ethiopian nationals.

Survivors have been receiving medical, food, and psychosocial support in Obock through the cooperation of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and local authorities. IOM Chief of Mission Alexandre Coissac described the event as a “devastating loss of life” and a “brutal reminder” of the dangers faced by migrants from the Horn of Africa attempting to reach Gulf nations for economic opportunities.

According to IOM data, more than 20,000 Ethiopians have arrived in Djibouti since September 10. The organization also reported that over 900 migrants have died or gone missing on this specific migration route so far in 2025.

Claims

What the coverage asserts, and how many sources carry each claim.

Coverage disagrees

Sources make claims that cannot both be true. CLSTR reports the disagreement; it does not decide who is right.

  • "At least 139 migrants died in a boat capsizing off the coast of Djibouti."

    vs

"The vessel was carrying approximately 305 people."

The sum of reported deaths (139), missing persons (84), and survivors (82) is 305, which matches the total capacity, but the claim of 'at least 139' deaths combined with the other figures leaves no's'

  • "At least 82 survivors have been accounted for."

    vs

"Approximately 84 people are missing following the incident."

The claims are not inherently contradictory, but the total number of people accounted for (deaths + missing + survivors) must equal the total vessel capacity.
