DK Metcalf faces scrutiny amid poor start with Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf is facing intense scrutiny following a difficult start to the 2026 NFL season. After signing a four-year, $132 million extension following his trade from the Seattle Seahawks, Metcalf has struggled to meet production expectations.

In a Week 2 matchup against the New England Patriots, Metcalf was largely neutralized by Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez, recording only four receptions for 27 yards. The performance included two costly drops. New England Patriots safety Kevin Byard noted that Metcalf appeared to struggle during the game, stating, “I don’t think he had a lot of fun at all.”

Through the first two games of the season, Metcalf has recorded only eight receptions for 67 yards and zero touchdowns. Statistical analysis indicates a decline in efficiency, with Metcalf ranking low in EPA per target and success rate when targeted compared to other league players.
