DK Metcalf performance scrutiny with Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf has faced scrutiny following a difficult start to the 2026 NFL season. After joining the team via trade from the Seattle Seahawks and signing a four-year, $132 million extension, Metcalf has struggled to meet production expectations.

Early season statistics show a decline in efficiency, with Metcalf recording only eight receptions for 67 yards and zero touchdowns through the first two games. Data from Pro Football Focus indicates a 27.3% drop rate on on-target passes, ranking him 74th out of 78 qualified receivers. During a Week 2 matchup against the New England Patriots, Metcalf was neutralized by cornerback Christian Gonzalez and was noted by safety Kevin Byard as appearing to struggle, with Byard stating, “I don’t think he had a lot of fun at all.”

Despite these performance issues, Steelers coach Mike McCarthy has expressed full confidence in the veteran, stating that the team continues to support Metcalf and intends to keep targeting him in the passing game. Metcalf has also noted that his teammates have been supportive in helping him maintain focus.
