DMK backs delimitation bill, straining INDIA bloc and prompting council suspension in Coimbatore

In the Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) reportedly supported the contentious delimitation bill, which could redraw constituency boundaries and help the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secure the two‑thirds majority required to pass the legislation. RSP MP NK Premachandran told CNN‑News18 that the DMK backed discussions at the all‑party meeting while seeking guarantees that southern states with successful population‑control programmes would retain their parliamentary representation. The move deepens a visible rift between the DMK and the Indian National Congress, which has recently left the INDIA bloc to back Vijay’s TVK in Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, a Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation council meeting descended into chaos as DMK and Congress councillors disputed alleged irregularities in the Semmozhi Poonga park project and a sewage‑treatment plant plan. Mayor K Ranganayaki suspended Congress councillor Gayathri for two months after she claimed harassment by DMK members. The incident underscores escalating tensions between the parties at both state and local levels.
