India delimitation, women's reservation, and political rift
Entities: DMK · Kanimozhi NVN Somu · Arunraaj · Congress · Manickam Tagore
Overview
The Indian government is pursuing constitutional reforms aimed at the 2029 general election, including a "One Nation, One Election" model, a nationwide delimitation exercise, and a 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures. To expedite the women’s reservation, the BJP has signaled a willingness to use 2011 Census data rather than waiting for the post-2026 Census.
During the Monsoon Session (20 July–13 August), the ruling NDA sought the two-thirds majority required for these changes. Political realignments, including 20 Trinamool Congress rebels forming the Nationalist Citizens Party of India and six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs joining the Eknath Shinde faction, have bolstered the coalition's position.
The DMK's stance has fluctuated; while the party participated in discussions seeking guarantees that southern states would retain their parliamentary representation, leaders later warned that any delimitation reducing southern seats must be delayed for 25 years. This has caused significant friction within the INDIA bloc, particularly with the Congress party. Tensions between the DMK and Congress have manifested in local disputes, such as a Coimbatore municipal council meeting that resulted in the suspension of a Congress councillor.
Further complicating the landscape, the Supreme Court has urged the government to implement the Women’s Reservation Act before 2029, potentially using older census data. Additionally, the DMK has utilized adjournment motions to address the Mekedatu dam dispute, citing water security concerns for Tamil Nadu.
