DMK faces internal crisis following Tamil Nadu election defeat

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is facing internal instability following a significant defeat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The party, which previously held power, now sits in the opposition with 59 seats, while the actor-led TVK holds 108 seats and governs the state.

Party leader M. K. Stalin has faced personal setbacks, including losing his Kolathur seat to TVK’s VS Babu. Although Stalin sought a recount through the courts, the Madras High Court and Supreme Court have not overturned the results. In response to the loss, a four-member group including Stalin, Udhayanidhi Stalin, and Kanimozhi has begun reorganizing district leadership.

Internal criticism has intensified, with Law and Electricity Minister C. T. R. Nirmal Kumar publicly calling for M. K. Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin to resign to restore the party’s respectability. Nirmal Kumar attributed the electoral loss to ‘family politics’ and a perceived dynasty-style leadership, suggesting that the party must embrace democracy and move away from generational rule to regain public trust.
